SEMINAR
ON INTELLIGENT DESIGN
Pastor
Howard Lawler
Saturday,
October 30th,
2004
in the FLC 9:00
a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
The
Intelligent Design movement (known as ID) is a relatively new scientific
enterprise driven largely by recent advances in our understanding of molecular
biology. We are now able to peek into a previously hidden world of highly
complex molecular structures. This has led a growing number of scientists (of
various religious and non-religious persuasions) to conclude that a mindless and
purely materialistic process cannot account for the observed facts. Therefore,
this new scientific position is a direct challenge to the position of
naturalistic evolution. Some people soberly predict a coming breakdown in the
prevailing evolutionary model due to the influence of ID.
What
should we make of this movement? What affect will this have on our children? How
does one view this movement from a biblical perspective? We will take up these
questions in our Christian Thought Seminar. Howard
Lawler, the Senior Pastor of Faith Church, will lead this exploration by
surveying the history and ideas of ID. We will also consider the various
reactions to the movement, and the viewpoints that fuel these reactions.
Finally, we will seek biblical perspective on the importance of the issues and
how they connect to our lives.
